Soul Warmth, Consumerist Comfort, and Other Things I love About Winter

That winter feeling. Browsing through online Christmas specials on Lush and Sephora while wearing fuzzy pajamas and sipping a glass of red wine. Everything is themed to the holidays. All the websites have ornament balls and sale stickers topped with ribbons. There are sales on all the things you’ve wanted to buy for yourself but never had the money to before. Now you can pick out a favorite bath bomb, a present to yourself. One night of relaxation after the busy workday. You can buy yourself a new mascara and maybe even that fancy sex toy you’ve been looking at. This is a time of self care. And treating yourself never felt so comforting.

It’s only 5PM and yet it’s dark outside. The most light in the room comes from the dim glow of the string lights you have artfully draped through your house. You secretly love this time of year. You love the darkness, the warm cozy feeling of hibernation. It’s a time of warmth, and knowing you are safe from the cold elements outside. If you reach out, you can touch your wall, cold to the touch, and see the window frosted at the corners. There in the reflection, your twinkle lights also shine. It’s a warm light; comforting.

You make a list of all the things you are going to buy your loved ones. You’ve saved up for this, putting fives and tens in your savings until you had enough to not worry about finances. For a month, you feel rich. Rich, not only because you can buy little gifts, but also because you have someplace to come home to at the end of the busy holiday workday. Maybe your mom or husband has made you a savory comfort dinner rich with meats and carbs. You could smell it as soon as you walked through the front door. You think of how happy your boyfriend will be when he opens the gift you picked out for him online.

You browse for other little treats to add to their pile; a chap stick, a facial scrub, fuzzy slippers, a new gadget for their car. After you’re finished shopping online, you curl up under your sheets and turn on your kindle. You begin to read, and the snow falls outside. You know you are loved, and that you are blessed. You’ve already given money to charity and bought a child in need everything they asked for on their list to Santa. You’ve already wrapped them in pretty paper while listening to Christmas songs on the radio. You were never good at wrapping, but you know it’s the thought that counts. Your nose is cold, even though you’re inside. So you pull the covers up over your face and fall asleep.

Things I plan on buying myself:

The New Nude Eyeshadow Palette from Huda Beauty
Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade by Anastasia Beverly Hills
Full Cover Concealer by Makeup Forever
Jingle Bells Bath Bomb by Lush
Mercury Retrograde Bath Bomb by Lush
An Audible Subscription by Amazon
Leuchtturm Bullet Journal from Amazon
Tombow Adhesive Tape from Amazon
Instax Mini Printer from Target

I also plan on eating a lot of oranges, spiced cider, and sugar cookies. Who else loves the winter? Driving on ice is never fun, but everything else about winter is beautiful. And comforting. And warm; the kind that feeds your soul.
