Greetings, Earthlings! Have any of you experienced a driver who ended up ruining your whole fucking day? Here’s my story time, regarding some four way stop road rage.
Not long ago, I was going on my merry way. Happy, good humored, and definitely having a good day. Until I came to a four way stop. You see, a middle aged man also came to the four way stop, as cars often do. He was under the impression that he had pulled his fancy ass up to the stop before I had, even though in my mind, I definitely perceived to have fully stopped my car before his. So naturally, we both tried to go first.
What followed was the most infuriating situation. He whipped his car directly in front of mine, rolled down his window, which was very close to mine at this point, mind you, and proceeded to spew profane hatred at me with his finger pointed forcibly at my face.
What do you do in a situation like this? I couldn’t pull away as he was blocking my path, and to roll down my own window and engage him would have escalated the situation and given him exactly what he wanted. I recall the term “you fucking bitch” being spit more than once. If I had given it back to him, he would have felt validated.
It hurt my feelings. I consider myself to be a good person, a fair person. So being called a fucking bitch hurt a lot. And why? Because I had perceived my car reaching the intersection first? Was the situation really enough to warrant such hatred and negativity being involved? Why did he feel the need to go off on a twenty-something female who was clearly non-confrontational?
I am delicate. I am weak. If you yell at me, I will cry. I felt it in my chest as he pulled away angrily. I also felt upset because in my mind, I had done nothing wrong.
In all of my experience on the road, I have encountered this sort of situation only a handful of times, and it has always come from a twenty to forty year old man. I have never experienced this with other female drivers. So I’m not saying it’s only male drivers, but in my experience, it has been.
If you are unfamiliar with the rules of four way stops:
- Whoever gets to a four way stop first has the right-of-way to go first.
- If two cars get to the four way at the same time, it defers to the person on the right hand side.
- You should stop for about 3 seconds before pulling away. No drive throughs.
Those are my rules which I learned when I first started driving. For more in-depth rules, as well as picture representations, check out The 4 Rules of 4-Way Stops.
