I love a full face of makeup from time to time. There’s just one problem. My dry skin. It is so dry that applying a full face of makeup usually means dealing with dragon scales later on. And while I do feel pretty cool molting like a snake, it’s also super gross.

The first thing worth discussing is your shower. During the winter months it might be tempting to jump under the flow of some scalding hot water to warm up, but hot water makes dry skin so much worse. Your skin will turn blotchy, tight, and eventually start peeling all over the place. Very attractive, I know.
Solution: I have gotten into the habit of working out before I shower so that I’m nice and heated. This means that when I get into the shower, I can make the water cooler. This technique helps the skin and also serves to get you in shape at the same time. If you don’t have the means to do a full workout, some heavy yoga will work just as well to get the blood flowing and your temperature up.
After my shower I immediately apply some Clinique Moisture Surge. It’s like a refreshing drink of water for my skin but doesn’t leave my skin feeling oily. A lot of moisturizers make me break out as well, including Clinique Moisture Surge Intense, which is the next step up from the one I use. It’s just a little too heavy. But the Moisture Surge is the perfect formula for my dry skin.
Some days I will also apply a toner just to even out my skin tone, but I find that if I use that too often, it dries my skin out even more. I occasionally use face masks as well. I highly recommend the Egg Cream Mask. It’s cheap and doesn’t make my sensitive skin react like a lot of other masks. My skin is so sensitive, in fact, that other masks will literally burn my skin. Eek! So be careful which masks you use. Test a small amount of the serum on your skin before slapping it all over your face.
I have bad heat sensitivity, so after my shower, my shoulders usually erupt in red patches of dry skin. While lotions and creams help to reduce the redness and dryness of my skin, I find that coconut oil works best. I apply a handful after my shower and let it soak into my skin before getting dressed and ready for the day.

After my moisturizer is well marinated into my skin, I begin my makeup application. I begin with concealer and follow that with my foundation. I use a BB cream foundation as I find it to be a little lighter than your average cakey foundation. Most others follow this up with powder, but I find that applying powder only serves to dry my skin out even more. When this happens, it sticks to the dry flakes and makes me look like a baked clay doll. No no. Don’t use powder if you have dry skin. Just the foundation. You want your skin to look a little moist too, so after you finish your makeup, you can use a dewy finishing spray. That usually works to keep the makeup from cracking.
I don’t always follow this step because I’m lazy, but it’s so important to remove your makeup after a long day. Especially if you’ve applied it to your entire face. You want your skin to be able to breath and rejuvenate during the night. I use St. Ives apricot face cleansing wipes to take off the majority of my makeup before washing my face with water and a rag. I do not use soap or face cleanser during this step as I find that dries me out more. Just plain water seems to do the trick.
Afterwards, once again, I apply a layer of the Clinique Moisture Surge. I cannot recommend this product enough. The nighttime is when I usually will use one of those masks mentioned above. I sometimes experiment with night serums I have on hand, but use these sparingly as I am always worried of burning my sensitive skin. The most important thing is to make sure my skin feels nice and soft and springy before jumping into bed. If I go to bed with a tight skinned face, I will wake up with peeling flakes. Again, oh so attractive.
And lastly, and probably most importantly, I have noticed that what you put into your body is just as important as what you put on your body. A healthy diet with lots of fruits and veggies will help keep your skin hydrated from within. I am not the biggest fan of tomatoes, but I find that when I eat them, my skin visibly improves. Blueberries also make my skin look bright and glowy, and I love me some blueberries!
