Why Blogging Is Perfect For Multipotentialites

May 28, 2019 No Comments

Today I am researching how to make money blogging. Yesterday I went on a binge researching how to write horror novels. Tomorrow I will be onto the next interesting thing there is to learn in this vast world. Such is the life of a Multipotentialite.

What is a Multipotentialite?

You may have heard them referred to as renaissance men, jacks of all trades, and now, most commonly, Multipotentialites (a term coined by Emilie Wapnick). The term refers to someone who wants to do it all, who cannot pick just one life path, or someone who has multiple hobbies that are important to them or that they use to make a living. Phew, that was a run on sentence. Don’t tell my english teacher.

Being a Multipotentialite is much more common than you might think. Even the most straightlaced doctors and lawyers may have multiple past times or hobbies, including playing the violin, flyfishing, or painting. These are just a few examples.

Myself? My interests range all over the place–from Japanese culture, bullet journaling, and writing all the way to etymology, anthropology, and occult studies–and I’m always looking for the next exciting topic to research. That’s why blogging is such a great outlet for Multi’s! Each post we make is its own isolated research topic. For someone who wants to learn everything there is about something before dropping it and moving on to the next topic, blogging almost seems like it was made for Multi’s!

The Nature of Blogging

While the niche blog has become quite popular these days, i.e. a blog that focuses on one specific topic, blogging is a broad and varied hobby. It’s like your own personal corner of the internet, where you are free to write what you feel drawn to and design it to look exactly how you want it to look. It’s yours. You can do with it whatever you want. For a Multi, this is like giving them the keys to paradise.

Even if your blog is niched, you still curate a post specifically and make it different than your others. You research, take pictures, structure the post, and share the post differently. This spurt of research in a certain area is what a Multi thrives on. We love devouring knowledge until we’ve uncovered the base and bones of a topic. So even if your blog is all about painting, each post you create will be uniquely different than the next.

It’s never monotonous. It is always changing.

The writing remains the same, but the content changes, and that’s what is so great about blogging. You don’t have to settle into a 80k word story or focus on one area for so long that it bores you. You have the privilege and even the need to cover a vast variety of topics within your niche.

Who better to tackle this challenge than a Multipotentialite, who lives from one obsession to the next?

I spent my whole life thinking I had to fit into a certain mold for living my life. I spent my whole life thinking people did one thing for a living and one thing only, that every person had one set path to walk. It was only recently that I accepted my renaissance soul and did what I was best at; writing about anything and everything that interested me.

The truth is, no one can tell you how best to live your life. There’s nothing wrong with being a jack of all trades, master of none. Because in my mind, and in the mind of many other Multipotentialites, mastering one topic would be boring. Why limit yourself? Why limit your curiosity? Do what you do best! Stop fighting your inquisitive nature! If you want to write on a topic, there is no one who has the authority to say you can’t. Your blog is yours. Embrace it!

Thanks for reading!

Take care,
